The Export Market Development Grant (EMDG) program, offered by the Australian Federal Government, supports businesses aiming to expand into international markets and grow their export sales. Eligible businesses can be reimbursed for up to 50% of their costs associated with promotional and export activities, with a cap of $80,000 per financial year.

This covers the costs associated with maintaining a representative in a foreign country for a period of more than six months, provided the representative is engaged in either of the following activities:
- Conducting market research related to your eligible products within the country
- Carrying out promotional efforts aimed at marketing your eligible products in that foreign market
Eligible expenses under this category may include:
- Salaries and wages of the overseas representative
- Office rental expenses in the foreign location
- Relocation costs, including hiring a replacement representative
- Educational expenses for the representative's children if they’ve relocated
- Recruitment fees for a new representative
These costs support businesses in building and sustaining a dedicated presence in international markets, helping them tap into new opportunities and develop a deeper understanding of foreign demand.
This category includes expenses for up to 21 consecutive days of travel for you or your representative between Australia and a foreign country.
Eligible costs cover:
- Economy class airfares for international flights
- A daily fixed allowance of $350 for meals, accommodation, local transport, and incidentals, based on a per diem rate
Travel durations may exceed 21 days and include activities beyond export promotion. However, only the days specifically dedicated to export promotion, up to a maximum of 21 continuous days, are eligible for reimbursement.
This support helps manage the costs associated with short-term international trips aimed at enhancing export opportunities.
Costs for hiring a consultant to perform one or both of the following tasks:
- Conduct market research for your eligible product in a foreign country
- Execute promotional activities to market your eligible product in that country
Eligible expenses include:
- Conducting original market research
- Developing export planning and pricing strategies
- Creating marketing materials
These services are crucial for effectively positioning your products and optimising your export strategies in international markets.
Expenses for up to 21 consecutive days of travel within Australia for you or your representative to market your eligible product to potential foreign buyers.
Eligible costs include:
- Economy class airfares for domestic flights
- A daily fixed allowance of $350 for meals, accommodation, local transport, and incidentals
- Costs for food, accommodation, and transport
- Participation in trade shows in Australia where many international buyers are present
This support helps cover costs related to marketing activities aimed at attracting foreign buyers.
Expenses for up to 21 consecutive days of travel between Australia and a foreign country, or within Australia, for a prospective foreign buyer to engage in promotional activities for your eligible product.
Eligible costs include:
- Economy class airfares for international flights
- A daily fixed allowance of $350 for meals, accommodation, local transport, and incidentals
- Costs for accommodation, food, and incidental travel expenses
This support helps cover the costs of hosting foreign buyers and facilitating promotional activities.
Expenses related to activities carried out by you or your representative to solicit business for your eligible products in a foreign country. This includes participation in trade shows and events aimed at generating business opportunities.
Eligible expenses cover:
- Costs for attending trade shows and events
- Exhibition costs, provided these are not already covered by the Australian Government or another entity under EMDG Rules section 42
These costs help support your efforts to attract and secure business opportunities in international markets.
Expenses for creating and distributing materials to promote or advertise your eligible product in a foreign country.
This includes:
- Costs for designing and building a website
- Expenses related to virtual events
- Social media marketing
- Google Advertising
The costs must be incurred by you, though promotional activities can be executed by third parties on your behalf.
Tier 1 applicants are eligible to request a grant for export readiness training to enhance the ability of you or your staff to market eligible products in foreign markets.
Eligible expenses include:
- Costs for training aimed at improving export readiness
Note: Training activities are not eligible for Tier 2 and Tier 3 applicants.
Costs associated with delivering export readiness or other training by Tier 1 grantees are not covered under this category.
This support helps Tier 1 businesses develop the skills and knowledge necessary to successfully engage in international markets.
